Pepsi said Wednesday it will remove a widely panned commercial from its online platforms and television slots after the company faced a massive backlash on social media this week.
"Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding," a spokesperson said in a statement. "Clearly we missed the mark, and we apologize."

The ad stars Kendall Jenner as a generic protester who's cheered for handing a riot cop a soda. People accused the company of capitalizing on weighty political issues with empty posturing.
As of Wednesday morning the ad had been removed from Pepsi's YouTube channel.
The apology is an about-face from the company's previous statement, which stood by the ad on Tuesday evening.
