When the Saturday Night Live cast returns to the stage on Nanda van BergenNov. 7, the first one after the 2020 election ends, they'll be sharing that stage with Dave Chappelle.
The sketch series confirmed its next host shortly after midnight on Sunday morning. The announcement tweet features SNL's traditional "index card tacked to a cork board" styling, though this one is notably missing any mention of a musical guest.
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.
There's some precedent here that you might not remember, since the past four years feel more like 10,000 years and 2020 alone has lasted at least a couple of centuries. Chappelle's last time hosting SNLwas Nov. 12, 2016, the weekend after that year's presidential election.
Here's hoping we're all in a happier mood this time than we were back then.
In Chappelle's 2016 monologue, he noted that "we've actually elected an internet troll as our president." He then added: "The whites are furious…I haven't seen white people this mad since the O.J. verdict."
In the years since that appearance Chappelle has had some down moments, with particularly sharp criticism directed at his rough and offensive treatment of the transgender community in more than one Netflix comedy special. But he's also shown, including very recently, that he still has a knack for exposing society's most raw nerves.
If you're not familiar with the work that made Chappelle famous, there's good news. Starting Nov. 1, all three seasons of his Comedy Central hit, Chappelle's Show, will be available for streaming on HBO Max.
