It's like The Voice, in reverse, and louder. With gongs. Any act that didn't get "gonged" received a score, with the winners taking home a cash prize.
That particular game show cocktail may not have fit the '70s and '80s palate, but television executives feel the time is ripe to strike anew.
“The comedy culture we are living in has finally caught up to The Gong Show, so the timing is perfect,” Sony Pictures executive vice president of reality and syndication programming Holly Jacobs said in a press release. “We’ve just found the right partners to bring back this iconic original.”
Arnett won't host the show, but it fits the brand of comedy cultivated in his roles on Arrested Development and Bojack Horseman. He will produce 10 episodes along with Evan Prager, Jesse Ignjatovic and Peter Principato.
The Gong Showbegan in 1976 and ran both daily and in syndication until leaving television completely in 1989. The show was hosted by Chuck Barris, creator of The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game, and featured a judging panel with comedy stars of the day like Arte Johnson, Phyllis Diller and more.
