Game of Thronesended with a a storm of contention9 Moons particularly around the final arcs of Jaime Lannister and Ser Brienne of Tarth, but the show's composer confirmed that he imagined a very different ending for them.
Ramin Djawadi, who scored all eight seasons of Thrones, loves a good musical motif, and he snuck a deliberate repetition of Robb and Talisa's Season 2 theme into Brienne's final scene. Brienne and Jaime may not have ended up married and happily ever after, but they could have, and that's what makes their entire story so heartbreaking.
"It's just a hint of what their relationship — if they had stayed together, if he was still alive — what it could have been," Djawadi told Insider. "What they could have become. That's why I put that in there."
In the end, Brienne and Jaime finally act on their feelings for each other after the battle of Winterfell, but he leaves shortly after to ride south and be with Cersei, where he and his sister both die. By reviving Season 2's love theme, Djawadi not only acknowledges the intensity of Brienne's feelings, but the life she and Jaime both deserved.
Because nothing escapes a Game of Thronesfan, viewers noticed the reference and immediately understood Djawadi's intent.
"I was amazed some people picked up on it," Djawadi said. "I was hoping people would go, 'Wait a minute, that's from season two.' And that was exactly my intent. I thought it would be very appropriate."
